Stock market con artists are pumping penny stocks (garbage) by using a "wrong number" scam. The SEC warned today that the scam is sweeping the country and involves small thinly traded stocks. The message is from a woman who claims to be calling a friend and is confiding "inside information" about a stock that will "shoot up." It's a scam that people are falling for and anyone getting the call should keep the name of the stock, the date and time of the call, the number called, and the number from which the call was made, if available. E-mail the info to Enforcement@sec.gov or call 1-800-SEC-0330.
